Vintage Hubcaps for Collecting and Decor

Fun Decor

A grouping of caps displayed on a shop or den wall is not only attractive but a great way to recycle items from the past. They are fun to collect, take up a small amount of space and are increasing in value as the older styles become more rare.

A hubcap is a covering for wheels on cars, trucks and some tractors that help to protect the tires from water and grime. In older days they used to be quite heavy and would fall off easily on rough roads.
Many were quickly snatched up and displayed on garage or shed walls like trophies. Most would have the name or trademark of the vehicle stamped on in a decorative eye catching design that would advertise the make of the vehicle.

Many caps used to be chrome plated and in the 1920′s they were made from aluminum. Today they are made from plastic and other materials that are lighter weight and tend to stay in place.
Certain antique and vintage caps in good condition with the logo still visible are extremely collectible and can fetch a high price.

I have a wonderful display on our shop wall of old car emblems, variety of hubcaps, license plates and trophies. It is the first place everyone looks. We all enjoy items from the past especially when grouped together.

Here are some things to watch for when purchasing a hub cap. Make sure there is little rust. I found some caps in our yard and was able to shine them up with steel wool. Is it vintage or a newer cap? New models are usually made of plastic and are less desirable. I prefer the heavy metal caps. Is the logo or emblem recognizable? Most of us want to see the logo from a distance.

Automobile Hubcaps

When we scrap out old cars from our property, I save all the decorative emblems, hood ornaments, hubcaps, vintage radios, grills if it is an old car or truck, license plates or anything that looks neat. I even save the keys because soon they will be obsolete and collectible.

Once I have removed the hubcaps I take some lightweight steel wool and shine them.
It doesnt take much work to restore them to their original state. The more shiny the hubcap the better it looks hung on your wall.

Hanging different types of hubcaps together with other car or truck related items will be sure to turn heads and be a focal point in your garage or shop.
